Mark McClain, CEO and Co-Founder of identity security leader SailPoint, didn’t set out to be an entrepreneur. He once envisioned retiring from a corporate career at IBM or HP, but found himself drawn to smaller companies where building strong teams took priority over climbing ladders. Today, McClain is known for championing a distinctly human approach to leadership. At SailPoint, he’s created a culture centered on values like integrity, impact, and collaboration. He’s quick to reference the “whole person” in hiring and management, stressing that “we value them as a person, not just an employee.” His approach, inspired in part by Patrick Lencioni’s The Ideal Team Player, has helped grow SailPoint from a small startup into a global enterprise with nearly 1,000 employees.
Originally from Southern California, McClain earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Point Loma Nazarene University, followed by an MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Before launching SailPoint in 2005, he co-founded Waveset Technologies, a pioneer in identity management later acquired by Sun Microsystems. He then served as VP of Software Marketing at Sun, and earlier held roles in international sales and marketing at IBM and HP. At SailPoint, McClain leads with a focus on company-wide alignment to core values while steering strategy across global markets and partnerships.
McClain’s philosophy on balance carries over from his personal life to the way he runs SailPoint. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he encourages a culture that respects shifting priorities. “The secret to ‘balance’ in life is to embrace the healthy imbalances,” he says, referencing his pie chart metaphor for how life’s demands naturally shift over time. This belief shapes policies like open vacation time and a deep understanding of employee needs beyond work. It’s a mindset that has not only shaped SailPoint’s culture but has helped retain the kind of people who thrive in environments built on trust, flexibility, and authenticity.
