As a young man, Zach Perret, Co-Founder and CEO of Plaid, saw a broken financial system failing millions and set out to reinvent it with Plaid, the company powering much of the infrastructure behind today’s booming fintech ecosystem. Since launching Plaid in 2013, Perret has transformed the way consumers connect their bank accounts to apps like Venmo, Robinhood, and Coinbase, enabling millions to engage with money more seamlessly. Under his leadership, Plaid has grown to serve over 12,000 financial institutions and hundreds of fintech companies, with tens of millions of users relying on its APIs. From a $5.3 billion valuation to surviving a blocked acquisition by Visa, Perret has kept Plaid at the forefront of financial innovation, turning it into a critical bridge between traditional banking and the digital economy.

Perret’s journey to fintech leadership began with a foundation in science and engineering. After earning a degree in physics and chemistry from Duke University, he joined Bain & Company as a consultant, where he began to see the inefficiencies plaguing financial systems. In 2012, alongside Co-Founder William Hockey, he left Bain to pursue an idea that would eventually become Plaid. What started as an attempt to build a personal finance app quickly shifted when they realized the lack of infrastructure connecting banks to apps. That pivot toward enabling developers was a turning point. His background in consulting, combined with technical curiosity, laid the groundwork for a company that would come to define modern fintech infrastructure.

Known for his thoughtful demeanor and low-key presence, Perret fosters a culture that prioritizes developer experience, consumer trust, and long-term thinking over flashy growth. Colleagues describe him as both intensely analytical and deeply mission-driven, someone who never loses sight of the human impact behind financial access. Perret’s legacy is already cemented as one of the architects of the digital finance movement, but his vision is far from complete. He continues to champion a future where finance is open, inclusive, and programmable, one API call at a time.
