Zeynep Ozdemir believes the fastest path to leadership isn’t always up—it’s out. Throughout her career, she’s stepped beyond traditional swim lanes to take on broader, riskier roles that expanded her impact and perspective. Now, as Chief Marketing Officer of Atlassian, she brings that same philosophy to scale—driving global marketing strategy, deepening product adoption, and positioning Atlassian as an essential platform for modern teamwork.
Her path began in engineering, with a bachelor’s degree from Harvard and a PhD in speech processing from Cambridge. She started as a software engineer, joined a startup in product and business roles, and transitioned into marketing after the company was acquired by Google. Later, she left a stable role there to run a regional media company’s digital transformation—gaining full P&L responsibility and managing teams across engineering, content, and marketing. At Palo Alto Networks, she helped launch new product categories and scale the company’s presence across the cybersecurity space.
Ozdemir sees today’s leaders as “renaissance” operators—capable of crossing disciplines, learning fast, and leading without waiting for permission. At Atlassian, she’s turning that belief into practice, shaping marketing as a cross-functional force aligned with product innovation, customer outcomes, and long-term growth.
