Lambda recently appointed telecom veteran Michel Combes as its next Chief Executive Officer as part of a broader management overhaul. Co-Founder Stephen Balaban transitions to the role of Chief Technology Officer, while his twin brother, Michael Balaban, assumes the position of Chief Product Officer. In tandem with these leadership shifts, the Nvidia-backed AI cloud provider named John Donovan, former head of AT&T's communications unit, as Board Chairman. This executive restructuring follows the recent additions of new operations and finance chiefs, positioning the startup to expand its data center network and evaluate a potential initial public offering.
Combes joins the company with extensive experience running heavily capitalized communications and investment organizations. He previously served as CEO of Sprint and later managed global portfolios as the head of SoftBank Group’s international division. His background also includes a tenure as CEO of Alcatel-Lucent, where he managed large-scale physical infrastructure deployments. Combes and Donovan both compare the current AI data center expansion to the massive telecom and wireless buildouts of the past three decades.
In his new role, Combes is charged with scaling the company to satisfy the global demand for AI computing services. He will oversee capital formation and infrastructure deployment for the neocloud provider, which specializes in renting access to graphics processing units. Combes noted that he joined the firm because of "the size of this opportunity, the scale, the amount of money at stake—financing and all of that—and the speed at which it has to be done."
