Sid Sijbrandij has always trusted the power of transparency to drive innovation. At GitLab, he embedded this principle into the company’s DNA, ensuring that every team member has access to the full context needed to make informed decisions. One of the most notable ways he put this into practice is through GitLab’s CEO Shadow Program, where employees spend two weeks closely observing leadership discussions, gaining firsthand insights into decision-making. This commitment to openness extends beyond internal processes—GitLab’s company handbook is publicly accessible, setting a rare standard for corporate transparency. As Co-Founder and Executive Chair of GitLab, Sijbrandij continues to shape the company’s growth, having served as CEO from 2012 to 2024 and leading its evolution into the most comprehensive AI-powered DevSecOps platform.

Born in the Netherlands, Sijbrandij earned a master’s degree in management science from the University of Twente before diving into diverse roles, from building recreational submarines to working on web applications for the Dutch Ministry of Justice. His passion for programming began in 2007 when he encountered Ruby and taught himself to code. In 2012, he discovered GitLab and saw its potential, eventually transforming it from an open-source project into a thriving business. Under his leadership, the company grew to more than 30 million registered users and became one of the largest all-remote organizations, redefining the future of work. Beyond GitLab, he founded Open Core Ventures to help launch more open-core companies and leads the Sijbrandij Foundation, which supports initiatives in clean energy, city development, and technology-driven social impact.

Sijbrandij’s approach is deeply rooted in curiosity and problem-solving. He believes that the best ideas often come from passion-driven exploration—what people experiment with today will shape industries in the future. His ability to scale an open-source project into a publicly traded company underscores this philosophy, proving that transparency, collaboration, and continuous iteration are not just values at GitLab, but the foundation of its success.
