From an early fascination with artificial intelligence to leading one of the most complex engineering challenges in the industry, Mo Elshenawy has always sought to push the boundaries of technology. As President of Cruise, he oversees a team of 2,000 engineers dedicated to perfecting autonomous vehicles. His leadership is defined by a deep understanding that AI is not a static technology—it must constantly evolve while balancing public trust, safety, and scalability. With no established playbook for bringing self-driving cars to commercialization, he has led Cruise’s deliberate and careful transition from research to real-world deployment, ensuring that every innovation is grounded in reliability and responsible development.
Born in Egypt, Elshenawy earned a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering and electrical engineering from Ain Shams University and obtained an MBA at East Texas A&M University. His expertise spans artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, and cloud infrastructure, positioning him at the forefront of technological breakthroughs. Prior to joining Cruise in 2018, he held leadership roles at Amazon and multiple tech startups, refining his ability to scale complex engineering projects. At Cruise, he is not just overseeing development—he is shaping the entire ecosystem that supports autonomous mobility, from AI-driven simulations to the integration of safety protocols that meet the highest standards.
The cornerstone of Elshenawy’s leadership is adaptability. Rather than adhering to a rigid management style, he believes in situational leadership—adjusting his approach based on the needs of the company, the team, and the ever-changing demands of the tech industry. He fosters a culture of experimentation where learning is prioritized over immediate success, ensuring that innovation never comes at the expense of safety.
