Lambda is moving to institutionalize its operations as it pivots from a specialized provider to a global utility for the superintelligence era. The company recently announced a major leadership overhaul, appointing veteran infrastructure operator Michel Combes as CEO and naming John Donovan, former CEO of AT&T Communications, as Chairman of the Board. This restructuring follows a $1.5 billion Series E fundraise and targets a massive expansion to 3 gigawatts of AI compute under management by 2030. Co-Founder Stephen Balaban, who transitions to a full-time CTO role, stated that the new team has "raised and deployed many billions across some of the most infrastructure-intensive businesses in history."
Combes joins Lambda with a career defined by managing the physical foundations of the internet, having previously served as CEO of SoftBank International, Sprint, and Alcatel-Lucent. Most recently, he held the dual role of chairman and CEO at Brightspeed. His background is heavily weighted toward capital formation and the scaling of capital-intensive businesses. Similarly, Donovan brings experience from his tenure as CTO and Group President at AT&T, where he led the global transition to software-defined networks and managed multibillion-dollar network operations.
The new mandate for this executive team focuses on transforming Lambda into a resilient, "unforgiving" infrastructure provider similar to a telecom carrier. Combes will lead capital deployment and the expansion of the company's AI factory footprint, while Stephen and Michael Balaban focus on technology architecture and product execution as CTO and CPO, respectively. Combes noted that his focus will be on "scaling Lambda’s operational architecture and deploying capital" to meet surging demand.
