Oportun Financial has appointed Doug Bland as Chief Executive Officer, concluding a search for a leader to steer the mission-driven fintech through its next growth phase. In this role, Bland will oversee Oportun’s technology-driven platform, which provides credit and financial services to borrowers often overlooked by traditional lenders. He will be responsible for strengthening the company's financial foundation and deepening member relationships as Oportun focuses on achieving sustainable profitability and long-term shareholder value.
Bland brings over 30 years of experience in consumer financial services, most recently serving as senior vice president and general manager of the Consumer Business at PayPal. During his tenure, he managed a global portfolio including Venmo, digital wallets, and credit products. He also previously served as president and COO of Swift Financial, leading the company through its acquisition by PayPal in 2017, and spent over a decade at Bank of America managing large-scale small business lending through the 2008 financial crisis.
The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Oportun as it seeks to scale its high-growth initiatives while maintaining strict credit discipline. At Oportun, Bland is expected to leverage his background in operational rigor and risk management to enhance the company's lending infrastructure.
