Andrew Macdonald, President and Chief Operating Officer at Uber, joined the company for a simple reason: he liked the product and wanted to help build it. That instinct, grounded in user experience rather than foresight, proved transformative. Today, he oversees all of Uber’s global business operations across Mobility and Delivery, including cross-platform initiatives like advertising and autonomous vehicles. Known for scaling Uber’s presence in over 70 countries, Macdonald has been central to the company’s bold climate agenda, pushing initiatives that are both environmentally and commercially sound. “Going green is good business for us,” he notes, citing Uber’s rise as the most widely available electric car network in the world.

Born in Canada, Macdonald holds a bachelor’s degree in business from the Ivey Business School at Western University. He first joined Uber in 2012 as its inaugural general manager in Toronto, later expanding operations across North America before taking on global mobility. At Uber, he is responsible for managing marketplace dynamics, shaping international expansion strategies, and overseeing large-scale operational logistics. Before Uber, Macdonald worked at Bain & Company and was also an entrepreneur, experience that helped him understand how to introduce a disruptive product across highly varied markets, from smartphone-limited populations in the Philippines to cash-preferred consumers in India.

Macdonald led Uber’s push to develop region-specific payment systems like cash transactions, first piloted in India and later scaled globally. He understands that real-world success in mobility requires more than sleek technology—it demands infrastructure, regulation, and cultural fluency. As he puts it, “We can innovate locally and deploy globally.” Whether building city-specific solutions for two-wheeler EVs in Latin America or advocating for second-hand EV access in North America, Macdonald’s leadership reflects Uber’s broader mission: transforming mobility to be electric, shared, and accessible to all.
