This year’s awardees are adept at navigating Toronto’s collaborative ecosystem, utilizing local talent and advanced technology to revolutionize their sectors. Their contributions not only elevate their respective fields but also reinforce Toronto’s position as a leading hub of technological excellence and creativity on the global stage.

Among this year’s awardees, Lorien Gabel, Co-Founder and CEO of Figment, is recognized for his leadership in blockchain technology, providing staking solutions that empower institutional clients. Mike Murchison, Co-Founder and CEO of Ada, stands out for his expertise in customer service automation, leading the development of an AI platform that facilitates billions of automated interactions for major enterprises. Meanwhile, Maggie Leen, Chief Executive Officer of Top Hat, is acknowledged for her leadership in educational technology, transforming the classroom experience with innovative solutions that promote student engagement and facilitate active learning.

1. Maggie Leen
Chief Executive Officer, Top Hat

Maggie Leen is the CEO of Top Hat, an education technology platform that provides student engagement solutions for higher education. Founded in 2009, Top Hat rethinks the university lecture experience by connecting instructors and students throughout the course journey. The platform features interactive polls, quizzes, and discussions to foster active learning, alongside a growing catalog of affordable interactive eTexts and customization tools.

Prior to joining Top Hat as CMO in 2021, Leen led the growth of a $900 million portfolio as VP of Marketing and Communications at Adtalem Global Education. Before that, she spent 14 years at Pearson in a variety of senior roles, most recently serving as Senior Vice President of Product Marketing in the company’s $1.4 billion Global Higher Education Division. With over 20 years in higher education, Leen has deep insight into the ways technology can support student success.

As CEO of Top Hat, Leen has overseen a significant expansion in the company’s business and innovation strategy, including the launch of an AI-powered teaching and learning assistant designed to help institutions scale the adoption of high impact teaching practices across faculty and courses. Leen graduated from Marquette University with a degree in biomedical science and psychology.

 

2. Mike Murchison
Co-Founder and CEO, Ada

Mike Murchison is Co-Founder and CEO of Ada, a customer service AI platform designed for enterprises undergoing digital transformation. Ada's platform enables companies to automate customer inquiries across various languages and channels. Since its inception in 2016, Ada has facilitated over four billion automated customer interactions for clients including Meta, Verizon, AirAsia, Yeti, and Square.

Murchison is a serial entrepreneur dedicated to leveraging AI to enhance business-customer interactions. He actively supports the Canadian innovation ecosystem, both locally and internationally. He previously worked as a customer service agent, which informed his understanding of how AI can improve experiences for both customers and support teams.

Before starting Ada, Murchison founded several other tech companies, including a social search community and a consulting firm for Fortune 500 clients. Murchison graduated from the University of Toronto with an undergraduate degree in cognitive science, psychology, and human computer interaction.

 

3. Liran Belenzon
Co-Founder and CEO, BenchSci

Liran Belenzon is the Co-Founder and CEO of BenchSci, a platform focused on improving drug discovery through artificial intelligence. Founded in 2015, BenchSci’s ASCEND platform aims to address the challenges of productivity in the pharmaceutical industry. The company has rapidly expanded from its original four co-founders to a team of over 350 employees, raising more than $200 million from prominent investors. BenchSci collaborates with 16 of the world’s top 20 pharmaceutical companies, over 4,500 academic institutions, and more than 50,000 scientists.

Before founding BenchSci, Belenzon achieved his commerce and law degrees and sold his first startup. He then immigrated to Canada to pursue an MBA at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. During his time at Rotman, he participated in the Creative Destruction Lab, where he connected with three fellow PhD students who shared his vision for leveraging AI to enhance drug discovery. As CEO, Belenzon is dedicated to making a positive impact on the world through the advancement of life-saving research.

 

4. Rizwan Jamal
Chief Executive Officer, Beanfield

Rizwan Jamal is the Chief Executive Officer of Beanfield Technologies Inc., having joined the company in July 2024 to support its ongoing growth. Beanfield, based in Toronto with additional offices in Montreal and Vancouver, operates a fully independent fibre-optic network designed and built by in-house experts. This approach ensures a fast, nimble, and reliable customer experience with unparalleled support for clients.

Jamal brings over 25 years of operational experience and deep industry knowledge to his role as CEO. Prior to joining Beanfield, he was CEO of Xplore, one of Canada’s largest rural facilities-based telecommunications providers. Prior to Xplore he worked at Bell Canada Enterprises Inc. for over 12 years, where he served as President of Residential and Small Business. In addition, he spent 11 years at Telus Corporation in various roles, including Senior Vice President of Consumer Marketing.

5. Cory York
Co-Founder and CEO, Webware.Ai

Unlocking Small Business Potential: Cory and Webware.ai

Cory is transforming how small businesses compete in the digital age through Webware.ai and its AI assistant, “Rivi.” By automating and optimizing digital marketing, Rivi helps small businesses expand their reach, attract customers, and operate with efficiency once reserved for larger companies.

With over 4,000 clients across 400 cities in North America, Webware.ai provides a complete marketing solution—from website creation to AI-driven customer engagement. Under Cory’s leadership, strategic partnerships with companies like Staples and Bell Canada have further empowered entrepreneurs to scale effectively.

A seasoned entrepreneur with two successful exits before 40, Cory is also a passionate advocate for small business growth, frequently sharing insights as a speaker and supporting youth programs to inspire the next generation of leaders. 6. Shiz Aoki
Co-Founder and CEO, BioRender

Shiz Aoki is the Co-Founder and CEO of BioRender, a platform that enables scientists to create scientific figures quickly and accurately. Aoki’s interest in science communication began at age 14 when she was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s medical drawings. She went on to graduate from the Johns Hopkins Medical Illustration program and began her career as a science illustrator at National Geographic, where she worked for eight years.

Aoki later founded Anatomize, a medical illustration and design studio, where noticed a significant demand for effective scientific visuals and identified a gap in accessible tools and services to help scientists communicate their work. Motivated to address this gap, she shifted her focus to empowering scientists at all career stages to create impactful visuals. Through BioRender, she and her team aim to accelerate scientific discovery and education by providing tools and resources that make creating complex scientific visuals accessible and user-friendly.

 

7. Dan Park
Chief Executive Officer, Clutch

Dan Park is the Chief Executive Officer of Clutch, Canada’s largest online automotive retailer. Clutch’s platform offers high-quality pre-owned vehicles through its website. The company’s Sell-to-Clutch technology prices over 30,000 vehicles each week and offers consumers with an Instant Cash Offer. Since joining Clutch in 2017, Park has led the company’s 3,000% growth and its $130 million in venture capital financing.

Prior to joining Clutch, Park was General Manager and Head of Uber Eats Canada. During his time at Uber, Park led the growth of Uber's food delivery platform in Canada, scaling the business to a billion-dollar-plus operation and leading a team of over 150 people across operations, strategy, sales, marketing, and customer success. Park led Uber Eats' expansion into over 80 markets across Canada, signing the first major enterprise partnerships with McDonald’s, A&W, Recipe Group, Popeye’s and Starbucks. 

Previously, Park was a Venture Partner at Azure Capital Partners and led the firm’s Canadian investment efforts. He served as a Board Member for Kissmetrics and FanXchange, and Board Observer for Ranovus, and The Bouqs. Park also worked in the M&A group at Deutsche Bank Securities in New York focusing on technology, media, and telecommunications and at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto. Park received an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor of commerce degree in economics and finance from McGill University.

 

8. Lorien Gabel
Co-Founder and CEO, Figment

Lorien Gabel is the CEO and Co-founder of Figment, a staking provider for over 500 institutional clients including asset managers, custodians, exchanges, foundations, and wallets. With more than 30 years of experience in building and leading global technology companies from concept to exit, Gabel is an accomplished entrepreneur with a diverse background.

At the age of 24, Gabel left his legal career to join his younger brother Matt in running an emerging internet company. Under his leadership, Interlog, one of Canada’s first commercial ISPs, expanded from a basement operation to over 150 employees and 65,000 customers, achieving profitability before being acquired by a multinational telecommunications provider.

Gabel and Matt subsequently co-founded Bird on a Wire Networks, a managed web hosting and data center provider, which was among the first in Canada and was acquired by AT&T Canada within two years. Their third startup, pingg.com, based in New York City, was acquired by 1-800-Flowers. 

In addition to his entrepreneurial ventures, Gabel has held leadership roles in Fortune 500 companies, including Micron, and served as Global VP of Business Development for MessageLabs, where he was instrumental in driving significant U.S. growth. He also advises several startups.

 

9. Rishi Nayyar
Co-Founder and CEO, PocketHealth

Rishi Nayyar is the Co-Founder and CEO of PocketHealth, a patient-centric image sharing platform that enables patients to easily access and engage with their diagnostic imaging records. By removing dependencies on network image sharing, PocketHealth integrates into healthcare systems, improving efficiency and reducing costs for providers while giving patients greater control over their healthcare information.

Nayyar is dedicated to transforming how sensitive patient information is shared within the healthcare system, addressing the business challenges that accompany this transition. He believes that placing patients at the center of the record release process facilitates ethical, secure, and efficient data movement throughout the care journey. Previously, he worked in corporate and investment banking at Citigroup. Nayyar earned an undergraduate degree in business administration from Ivey Business School at Western University.

 

10. Zain Manji
Co-Founder and Co-CEO, Lazer Technologies

Zain Manji is the Co-Founder and CEO of Lazer, an engineering and design agency that collaborates with leading companies such as Shopify, Google, Coinbase, Abridge, Alo Yoga, October's Very Own, Uniswap, Abridge, Universal Music Group to design, build and ship innovative products.

Prior to Lazer, Manji served as the CEO and Co-Founder of Supercharged SMS, a SMS/MMS marketing and messaging platform on Shopify that helped more than 20,000 merchants. Manji was also previously the Co-Founder of Fiix (YC W17), a managed-marketplace that sent expert licensed car mechanics to customers' homes to fix their vehicles. Earlier in his career, he was a software engineer at Instagram and Google.

In addition to his entrepreneurial ventures, Manji is an active investor in more than 50 companies and funds, including Italic, Groq, Berachain, Thirdweb, Certn, Nabis, Float, Avro Life Sciences, Ether.fi, Flashbox, Multicoin Capital, Roach Capital, Inovia, and more. He graduated from the University of Toronto.

 

11. Ted Hastings
Chief Executive Officer, Ionik

Ted Hastings is the Chief Executive Officer of Ionik, a data-driven performance marketing technology company focused on assembling the most effective and complete suite of advertising, marketing and monetization solutions for brands, advertisers and publishers while building an extensive proprietary repository of opted-in first party data. 

Hastings has 20 years of experience in executive leadership, including overseeing more than 30 acquisitions. He previously served as CEO of RhythmOne, Perk, and GBG, which were all sold to other companies. Hastings is a CPA and a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University. 

 

12. Nicholas Bertram
President and CEO, Flashfood

Nicholas Bertram is the Chief Executive Officer of Flashfood, an app-based marketplace that connects consumers with fresh food while reducing the amount of food grocery stores send to landfill. The mobile app operates in over 2,300 grocery locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Shoppers can buy items from grocery retailers through the Flashfood app and pick them up in-store at competitive prices while collectively reducing food waste.

Bertram is a first-generation college graduate with more than 20 years of experience in the retail industry, where he dedicated his career to achieving sustainability, innovation and growth for companies including Jewel-Osco, Walmart and most recently as president of The GIANT Company, an Ahold Delhaize brand. While leading TGC's transformation to a purpose-led company, eliminating food waste became a shared passion.

In addition to his role at Flashfood, Bertram is also an independent director for PECO, Clemens Food Group, Pennsylvania Chamber, and CHOP's Foundation Board. Bertram graduated from the University of Phoenix with an MBA and from Eastern Kentucky University with an undergraduate degree in business administration.

 

13. Emiel Bril
Co-Founder and CEO, VendorPM

Emiel Bril is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of VendorPM, a vendor management and procurement platform built to modernize the way vendors and property management companies work together. By enhancing operational efficiency and reducing costs, VendorPM aims to facilitate improved communication and transparency within the commercial real estate industry.

Bril started his first business at the age of 14 by selling door-to-door window cleaning services. His experience working with property managers inspired him to found VendorPM in early 2020. Since then, the company has scaled across North America, raising over $25 million from leading venture capitalists. Bril graduated from McMaster University with an undergraduate degree in commerce and business.

 

14. Aqeel Abbas
Chief Executive Officer, Workstaff360

Aqeel Abbas is the Chief Executive Officer of WorkStaff360, a provider of virtual assistant services. As CEO, he is dedicated to supporting small businesses, startups, and executives by offering a wide range of remote support services, including executive assistance, customer service, sales, and bookkeeping. His focus is on providing high-quality offshore staff, allowing clients to focus on growth while reducing operational costs. 

Under Abbas’ leadership, WorkStaff360 has become a trusted name in virtual staffing, helping businesses scale without the challenges of traditional hiring processes. His vision is to enable companies to save over 70% on employee costs while maintaining the quality needed to achieve their goals. Abbas ensures that clients benefit from affordability and top-tier expertise, removing the burdens of traditional hiring and payroll management. 

Abbas completed executive studies at Harvard Business School, where he focused on digital marketing strategy and launching tech ventures. He also holds an MBA from COMSATS University Islamabad and a bachelor's degree in commerce from the University of the Punjab. 

 

15. Paul Patterson
Chief Executive Officer, Cinchy

Paul Patterson is the Chief Executive Officer of Cinchy, appointed in December of 2023. Patterson is a strategic growth and success executive with 30 years of experience in cloud, SaaS, analytics, and infrastructure, focused on driving revenue growth by helping organizations exceed their goals and build strong customer relationships.

Cinchy develops solutions that enable real-time collaboration by liberating data across the enterprise and creating an evergreen data network. Under Patterson's leadership, the company aims to enhance customer engagement and improve systems consolidation within the community financial services sector through Collaborative Intelligence.

Prior to Cinchy, Patterson served as Operating Partner and Resident CRO at Next47. There, he grew revenues from $4.5 million to $22.5 million, achieving 5x year-over-year growth, and created the organization’s first inside sales team to support portfolio growth with 60% DEI hires. Before Next47, Patterson was Vice President of Sales and GM of Americas Enterprise at NetApp, where he launched the global cloud sales organization and grew ARR from $8 million to $112 million.

 

16. Stephany Lapierre
CEO and Founder, TealBook

Stephany Lapierre is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of TealBook, a company dedicated to delivering trusted supplier data for businesses. With a strong commitment to ensuring data quality, Lapierre and her team made a significant decision two years ago to re-platform their services, allowing for more efficient and impactful outcomes for their customers.

Under her leadership, TealBook provides unparalleled data quality on B2B suppliers, offering transparency and flexibility for integration with systems such as source-to-pay (S2P), business intelligence (BI) tools, data lakes, and generative AI solutions. 17. Daniel Goerz
Chief Executive Officer, Habitat Learn

Daniel Goerz is the CEO and Co-Founder of Habitat Learn, an edtech company focused on enhancing student engagement with educational content. Under Goerz’s leadership, Habitat Learn has developed Messenger Pigeon, a platform designed to foster inclusivity in learning environments. This tool allows students to capture, organize, and interact with their course materials in a multimedia-enhanced manner, going beyond traditional note-taking and transcription.

Since its launch, Messenger Pigeon has become a trusted tool across more than 300 institutions in North America, serving over 27,000 students. Goerz's commitment to accessible learning solutions originates from his early career in disability services at Canadian colleges, where he gained insight into the challenges faced by students and institutions. 

This experience informs his dedication to ensuring that Habitat Learn's products cater to diverse learners and adhere to the principles of Universal Design for Learning, alongside offering restructured pricing models for higher education institutions. Goerz is dedicated to keeping the needs of students and educational institutions at the forefront of Habitat Learn’s innovation.

 

18. Maggie Adhami-Boynton
Founder and CEO, Shopthing

Maggie Adhami-Boynton is the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of ShopThing, a buy and sell luxury marketplace powered by video and AI. Adhami-Boynton has over 15 years of experience in the startup ecosystem starting and scaling technology companies.

Prior to founding ShopThing, Adhami-Boynton served as VP of Operations at Plastic Mobile, where she gained valuable insights into technology and operations. Recognizing the potential for live shopping in the North American market, she leveraged her expertise in tech and luxury to launch ShopThing in 2019.

ShopThing’s Marketplace App was launched in March 2021.The platform focuses on short-form video shopping, allowing consumers to purchase luxury items from various global markets through influencers. Adhami-Boynton holds a master’s degree in management from Harvard University.

 

19. Gil Silberstein
Founder and CEO, Myblueprint

Gil Silberstein is the Chief Executive Officer of myBlueprint, a K-12 education technology provider with a mission to engage and prepare every student in their journey from education to career. Recognized for innovative career education, competency-based learning, and student portfolio platforms, myBlueprint products are licensed by hundreds of school districts and actively used by 1.5 million students each year.

Silberstein co-founded myBlueprint in 2005. In his role as CEO, Silberstein leads a team of professionals and oversees execution of diverse functions from people management, engineering, growth, and customer support. His core focus is the company’s overall strategy and product development to improve career education practices in schools and help students, teachers, and families capture and celebrate growth and learning.

 

20. Danial Hadizadeh
Chief Executive Officer, Mitrex

Danial Hadizadeh is the Founder and CEO of Mitrex and Cladify, brands focused on providing sustainable building envelope solutions. Mitrex specializes in building-integrated photovoltaic technology, enabling mid-to-high-rise buildings, schools, airports, and hospitals to generate clean, sustainable energy through integrated cladding, solar railings, and other innovative products.

Hadizadeh's commitment to design excellence and sustainability drives the development of solar-integrated building materials, such as Solar Facades and Solar Roofs, allowing structures to harness solar energy without compromising aesthetics. The launch of eFacade Lite exemplifies this approach, offering a customizable system for creating energy-producing facades.

Under Hadizadeh’s leadership, Mitrex and Cladify continue to expand their reach across North America and beyond. With over 25 years of experience in architecture and sustainable technologies, Hadizadeh continues to contribute to advancements in the green building movement.

 

21. Ryan Austin
Founder and CEO, Cognota Insight

Ryan Austin is the Founder and CEO of Cognota, a company specializing in Learning Operations software. Cognota's LearnOps platform consolidates workflows, optimizes resources, and provides data-driven insights to help Learning and Development (L&D) teams transform their operations into strategic business drivers.

With over 10 years of experience in improving learning and development, Austin is focused on creating innovative products that enhance productivity and automate operational processes for learning teams. Prior to Cognota, Austin served as Senior Vice President for World Trade Group, an organization that offers live events, online products, and training courses. He also co-founded GoFish Cam, an underwater camera that sits on your fishing line, which was sold in 2019. 

Austin studied sociology at York University, business and corporate communications at Western University, and completed various entrepreneurship courses through DMZ, Surge Accelerator, StartEd Accelerator, Telluride Venture Accelerator, Capital Factory, and The Next Founders Program.

22. Eric Rodgers
Founder and CEO, Stacktics

Eric Rodgers is the Founder and CEO of Stacktics, which was formed in 2022 through the merger of StackPros and DRVN Intelligence. Both companies, established in 2017, were designed to empower enterprise marketing teams with objective strategic support and custom data-focused solutions. Rodgers focuses on delivering excellence in marketing, analytics, and cloud computing technologies, leading the organization's evolution and transformation within the digital ecosystem.

Rodgers began his career in paid search marketing over 15 years ago, and has developed expertise across all major digital media channels and associated technologies. He has utilized this knowledge to support some of the largest companies in Canada. In 2017, he transitioned from the Digital Media Agency space to leadership roles at StackPros and DRVN Intelligence.

The platform offers intelligent product recommendations and powerful analytics, helping over 30,000 stores achieve success in the e-commerce landscape.

With a background as a music producer, Wehbi has contributed to popular tracks, including the theme song for Netflix's "Queer Eye." He transitioned to technology by co-leading EMI Music Canada's MOArtist "Get Discovered" competition, where he served as Chief Technical Officer.

24. Tunde Omotoye
Co-Founder and CEO, HumanSquad

Tunde Omotoye is the Co-Founder and CEO of HumanSquad, an immigration tech company offering solutions that streamline the journey for immigrants by connecting them to resources, tailored products, and expert support, making their immigration process accessible and affordable. HumanSquad’s platform comprises two primary products: Schooliply, a global student recruitment tool, and Travooly, a platform for travel services and visa applications.

With over 11 years of experience, Omotoye brings a rich blend of human resources expertise and tech leadership. Before founding HumanSquad, he held pivotal roles in the Fortune 500 and 100 companies within the industry, including Tech Lead at BMO Financial Group and Tech Manager and Head of Unit at Allstate, where he spearheaded strategic initiatives and technology-driven projects. He also has a strong background in global representation as a Canadian delegate for the G20 YEA Summit in Brazil.

Omotoye is an advocate for tech innovation in service of social impact, constantly striving to build tools that make a genuine difference in people’s lives. He is currently studying a Master’s in Public Policy, Administration, and Law at the prestigious York University in Toronto.

25. Onyeka Akumah
Founder and CEO, Treepz

Onyeka Akumah is the Founder and CEO of Treepz, a corporate mobility startup in Africa operating in six countries and serving more than five million customers. He has established a reputation as a serial entrepreneur in the African market, with a strong track record in building and leading high-impact ventures. 

Before founding Treepz, Akumah’s previous ventures included Farmcrowdy, one of Africa’s largest agriculture technology companies, RentSmallSmall, Nigeria’s largest property technology startup, and Qwikgist, a social news aggregator later sold to a media company.

Beyond building his own companies, Akumah actively contributes to the broader African tech ecosystem. He has provided mentorship to more than 200 startups at Techstars Toronto and Founders Institute, sharing his expertise and guidance with the next generation of entrepreneurs. He also invests in startups like Alajo, HealthTracka, Jise, and MoleculaPro, supporting innovation and growth throughout the continent.
