Sophia Mendelsohn stands at the intersection of sustainability and corporate growth, pioneering business models that address environmental challenges without sacrificing financial objectives. At SAP, where she serves as Chief Sustainability and Commercial Officer, Mendelsohn has been instrumental in integrating sustainability into the company's business strategy. Her approach is pragmatic, recognizing that businesses are driven by profit, not altruism. By aligning economic incentives with environmental goals, Mendelsohn pushes companies toward sustainability while ensuring profitability. This balance, which she refers to as casting beyond the immediate quarter, allows her to engage stakeholders like investors and boards in a conversation about the long-term risks and opportunities of climate change.

With over 15 years of experience, Mendelsohn has developed a deep expertise in corporate sustainability. She previously held prominent roles as Chief Sustainability Officer at JetBlue Airways and Cognizant, where she founded and led sustainability and ESG initiatives. At SAP, she oversees both the global sustainability business and corporate affairs, working to expand the company's sustainability software and lead its net-zero initiatives. Mendelsohn's role is unique, as it bridges SAP's internal sustainability efforts with its external goal of enabling clients to transition to low-carbon business models. Reporting directly to SAP's CEO, she drives the company’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030, a full two decades ahead of its original target.

One of the most compelling aspects of Mendelsohn's work is her ability to see sustainability as a financial imperative. She believes that the evolving investor landscape, focused on transparency and climate risk, is driving companies to move beyond mere compliance. Mendelsohn’s pragmatic view is clear: sustainability is not just an environmental issue; it’s a business strategy.
