Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has reorganized the company’s leadership to strengthen its position, announcing that Judson Althoff, a 12-year Microsoft executive who has led its commercial sales for nearly a decade, will become CEO of Microsoft’s commercial business. The newly created role will oversee engineering, sales, marketing, operations, and finance teams, representing over 75% of the company’s $282 billion in fiscal 2025 revenue.

Nadella described the move as part of a “reinvention” for Microsoft, aimed at aligning its operations and customer engagement with the next phase of AI transformation. The reorganization also places marketing and operations under Althoff’s leadership, with Chief Marketing Officer Takeshi Numoto and Chief Operating Officer Carolina Dybeck Happe continuing to collaborate closely with Nadella.

Explaining the strategic shift, Nadella said, “This isn’t just evolution, it’s reinvention, for each of us professionally and for Microsoft.” He added that the change will allow engineering leaders and himself to focus on “datacenter buildout, systems architecture, AI science, and product innovation.” Nadella credited Althoff for building Microsoft Customer and Partner Solutions (MCAPS), which he called the company’s most important growth engine. The reshuffle highlights Nadella’s intent to dedicate more time to long-term technology strategy while delegating day-to-day commercial execution.
