Joe Thomas saw an untapped opportunity where others overlooked it—workplace communication lacked the speed and clarity of video. Leading Loom as its CEO and Co-Founder, Thomas built the company around the idea that asynchronous video could revolutionize how teams connect, collaborate, and share ideas. The journey wasn’t instant success; it took iterations and failures, such as the initial OpenTest platform, to refine what eventually became Loom. When OpenVid, Loom’s predecessor, became the number one Product Hunt entry on launch day, it was clear they had struck a nerve. What set Loom apart wasn’t just the technology but its viral nature—people didn’t just use it; they shared it. That organic momentum defined the company’s path, with Thomas ensuring Loom continuously evolved to meet the needs of modern workplaces.
Born and raised in the United States, Thomas earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from Indiana University Bloomington. His early career saw him take on leadership roles at MyLife.com and MediaPass, where he honed his expertise in product and operations. However, it was his entrepreneurial drive that led him to co-found Redesign Agency while still in college, a venture that laid the groundwork for his future in tech. At Loom, Thomas focuses on scaling the company’s reach while maintaining its core mission—making video communication seamless and indispensable for professionals.
Thomas understands that true growth comes not just from a great product but from building an ambitious vision around it. Loom wasn’t the first company to explore video messaging for the workplace, but it became the most effective by tackling every stage of the user experience—from recording and editing to sharing and storing. Thomas and his team knew that for Loom to become essential, it had to be more than a tool; it had to be a habit. By creating a frictionless experience that encourages adoption and word-of-mouth growth, he positioned Loom as a leader in async communication. The company’s success is proof that when a product solves a real problem and makes people’s lives easier, it doesn’t just find a market—it defines one.
