He currently serves as the Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at GE, where he oversees a diverse team of scientists and engineers. One of his most notable roles has been as the interim CEO of Onshore Wind at GE. In this capacity, he has led efforts in cooperation, innovation, production, and maintenance of GE's onshore wind turbines. Abate's journey at GE commenced in 1990, and over the years, he has held pivotal positions in engineering, services, production, and quality. His time as President and CEO of GE Renewable Energy, from 2005 to 2013, was characterized by a relentless focus on developing both onshore and offshore wind technologies. During this period, GE established itself as a frontrunner in the renewable energy sector.

From 2013 to 2015, he served as the President and CEO of GE Gas Power Systems, during which time the world witnessed the launch of the HA gas turbines, which set world records for efficiency and performance. His impact on the global energy landscape was palpable.

Before joining GE, he had already made significant contributions to the field. He had led mechanical drive technology and new product development at Allied Signal and Zurn Industries, showcasing his knack for innovation and leadership.

Beyond his role at GE, Abate has been actively involved in various industry organizations and boards, including the UI Labs Board of Directors and his tenure as President of the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). These roles highlight his dedication to advancing sustainable technologies on a broader scale.

His educational background is equally impressive, with a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Union College and a Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
